Immobilization and Anesthesia of African lion (Panthera leo) 5 Cases
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Case Description- Five lions (one female and 4 male) were presented for diagnostic andsurgical treatment (wound management, castration and radiography). Immobilization oranesthesia was necessary to complete the procedure.Treatment and Outcome - Immobilization was induced using intramuscular injection ofvarious drug combinations (xylazine, diazepam or midazolam in combination withketamine). Inhalation anesthesia (halothane) was used to maintain anesthesia in an adultlion suffering from upper lip laceration. Castration was performed under field anesthesia.Opioid analgesic (morphine) was used to provide postoperative analgesia in surgical cases. No adverse effects or complications were observed during anesthesia and recovery period.Clinical Relevance- Chemical immobilization has been accepted as a routine procedure fornon-domestic animals. Intramuscular agents are used for immobilization and anesthesia forshort procedures. Following immobilization, inhalation anesthetics are used to maintainanesthesia in most species with excellent results. As with domestic animals, monitoring andsupportive care should be provided during general anesthesia in wild animals.

متن کاملA Metapopulation Approach to African Lion (Panthera leo) Conservation
Due to anthropogenic pressures, African lion (Panthera leo) populations in Kenya and Tanzania are increasingly limited to fragmented populations. Lions living on isolated habitat patches exist in a matrix of less-preferred habitat. A framework of habitat patches within a less-suitable matrix describes a metapopulation. Metapopulation analysis can provide insight into the dynamics of each popula...
متن کاملPrey preferences of the lion (Panthera leo)
Lions Panthera leo are generally thought to prey on medium to large ungulates. Knowledge of which species are actually preferred and which are avoided is lacking, however, as is an understanding of why such preference or avoidance may arise. An analysis of 32 studies over 48 different spatial locations or temporal periods throughout the distribution of the lion shows that it preferentially prey...

متن کاملFibroblastic osteosarcoma in a lion (Panthera leo)
This report describes a case of spontaneous fibroblastic osteosarcoma in the humerus of a lion from a private park in Perugia, Italy. The tumor had an irregular, smooth, brown surface and a generally firm, rubbery consistence with gritty to hard areas interspersed. The mass was poorly vascularized with areas of necrosis at the periphery. The cut surface showed a multilobulated mass that had bre...
متن کاملNorovirus in Captive Lion Cub (Panthera leo)
African lions (Panthera leo) are susceptible to viral diseases of domestic carnivores, including feline calici-virus infection. We report the identification of a novel enteric calicivirus, genetically related to human noroviruses of genogroup IV, in a lion cub that died of severe hemorrhagic enteritis.
